Emilio is a Partner and Head of the Patent Department at BERKEN IP, where he leads the firm’s intellectual property services with a strong focus on supporting innovation in the life sciences, chemical, and materials sectors. As a registered patent attorney, he works closely with R&D-driven organizations—ranging from biotech startups to research institutes and multinational companies—to protect and strategically manage their patent assets across Argentina and Latin America.
He advises on all aspects of the patent lifecycle, including drafting, prosecution, portfolio development, and cross-border coordination of filings. He also delivers high-level opinions on patentability, validity, infringement, and freedom-to-operate, helping clients navigate the competitive and highly regulated life sciences landscape.
Emilio holds a degree in Chemical Engineering (with honors) from ITBA (Buenos Aires, Argentina), a degree in Process and Environmental Engineering from INSA Toulouse (France), and a PhD in Engineering from ITBA. He also earned the CEIPI Diploma (France) with mentions in both “Patents” and “Trademarks and Industrial Designs,” further strengthening his foundation in international IP systems.
In parallel with his legal practice, Emilio has served since 2009 as an Associate Professor at ITBA, teaching Transport Phenomena, Thermodynamics, and Mathematical Modeling. He has published in several high-impact international journals and presented at global conferences, reinforcing his commitment to the advancement of science-based innovation.
Emilio is multilingual, speaking fluent Spanish, French, and English, as well as intermediate German. His language skills support his international practice and enable close collaboration with global clients and colleagues. He actively contributes to the global IP community through his roles in FICPI’s CET Group 5 (Biotechnology and Pharmaceuticals), AIPLA’s Chemical Practice and Latin America Committees, and as an observer on AIPPI’s Patent Committee. Since 2019, he lectures on IP in Argentina as an invited Professor at the CEIPI in Strasbourg, France.
